"Leave it to the divine powers to decide what suits us and what
is in keeping with our true interests. Instead of what pleases us,
the gods will give us what is most appropriate in each case.
Man is dearer to Them than he is to himself."

Juvenal 10. 347-50

The pious Rome that most of us are familiar with is one of magnificent temples with timeless statues, elaborate funerary games that drew Romans by the thousands, and grand processions which lined the streets during religious festivals; all in adulation of the many gods in the Roman pantheon.  While this perspective of Roman religion is not inaccurate, it is far removed from the daily religious practices which formed the basis of the Religio Romana.

In antiquity, daily worship was a manifestation of familial traditions, rooted in a committed belief system of divine intervention.  Romans sought to endear the benevolent forces through sacred acts which, in turn, would secure Their blessings for a successful life.  Propitiation and reverence were vital in establishing beneficial relations between mankind and the numina (spirits) and in maintaining peace with the gods (Pax deorum.)   These ancient concepts form the premise of modern worship in the Temple of Religio Romana.  Through daily veneration we can seek and sustain the blessings of the deities for both enlightenment and comfort; qualities that are requisite of everyone in our shared universe.  The natural forces that exist for our well-being deserve our continued devotion in order that we may flourish and bring peace and harmony to ourselves, our loved ones, and our community.
